While Billy was born and raised in a rich family, he lost his family members when he was just 16-years of age. His parents and sister lost their lives on 2nd March 1969, after their plane got caught up in a thunderstorm. Billy’s troubles didn’t stop there. Following the death of his parents, Billy was tricked into signing emancipation which resulted in him losing the fortune left behind by his parents.

Marriage and Life as a Nomad:

After a few months of struggling to get his life back together, Billy decided to tie the knot with Brenda on the 23rd of October, 1969. The pair’s marriage lasted for a total of five years before heading towards divorce. While Billy and Brenda had kids, not much was known about them.

Following his divorce, Billy left Texas and wandered around. 10 years after his divorce, Billy met his second wife, Ami Brown. In his memoir One Wave at a Time, Billy described the first time he met Ami.

In their search for a new home, the family got estranged on Mosman Island and had to be rescued 18-months later. After returning to Port Protection, Billy and Ami decided to head up to the Alaskan Bush and built themselves a house in Haines, Alaska. Even though Billy and Ami have moved to the lower 48 states for a couple of occasions, the Brown family home is still in Haines.

Billy was also the author of a memoir entitled,  One Wave At A Time, which later became the base for the reality TV show, Alaskan Bush People.
